One in three women will be beaten up or raped during her lifetime. That’s one billion women and girls. Through our collected efforts, we mobilised, engaged, awakened , and sensitised people world wide to end violence against women. We made ‘Violence Against Women’ a global human issue . On the 11th of February 2016, the JPIC members of Class XI performed a special assembly to create awareness among their fellow students about this special cause. They performed on the Mardaani theme song and the One Billion Rising anthem. At the end of the assembly the principal reminded the students that it is time to step out of our cocoons and rise against trafficking and violence against women.
The Inter-Loreto JPIC fest “Lumiere” held on 21st August, 2015, was organised by the JPIC unit of Loreto House. The theme of the fest was ” From Darkness to Light” ,and dealt with women who had faced adversities in their lives, but had come out of it to live a life of dignity. The participating schools were:- Loreto Day School, Sealdah, Loreto Day School, Bowbazar, Loreto Convent , Entally, Loreto Day School ,Elliot Road, Loreto Day School, Dharamtala, Loreto House the JPIC theme song ‘We’ll find a way ‘ composed by Loreto Shillong was introduced to the Loreto schools along with the JPIC logo. All Loreto schools had submitted entries for the song and logo design. Three events were held at the fest, all on the theme of women empowerment:- lunge-western dance luminist-poster making la scannon-movie making the chief guest for the opening ceremony was Sr.Sabrina- head of the JPIC wing of all loreto schools in India. Sr.Sabrina spoke about the atrocities being faced by women and children in our present day society and how we need to stand by them and support them. The overall winner for the competitions was Loreto Day School, Elliot Road. It was an excellent opportunity for the JPIC wing of the Loreto schools in Kolkata to interact with each other.
JPIC meet 2014- different schools were present in the meet along with loreto house were -Loreto Convent Entally Loreto Elliot Road -Loreto Dharamtala -Loreto Bowbazar -Loreto Sealdah JPIC animators and student representatives from all the Loreto schools met at Loreto House on November 26, 2014. The new national level representatives put forward their proposed plan for the year. The meeting was addressed by Sr. Anita Braganza, Province Leader and Sr. Monica Suchiang, Head, Development Projects. The students of each school were requested to design a logo for the Loreto JPIC Movement and compose a theme song. The best of the entries would be chosen.
A project was taken up for the Rainbow girls at Loreto House. Dresses in good conditions were asked to be collected from class IX and X students. The response was good. KMWSC invited the JPIC teachers to mark the opening of Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre, new home at Loreto Entally. From Loreto House two teachers were present for the occasion. It was very informative as KMWSC shared experiences related to their projects undergoing all over West Bengal. It was an enriching experience for all the JPIC teachers and others present there.
Earth Day was celebrated. Our students participated in various events organized by different centres around the city. They participated in debates and workshops organized by different schools. Sr. Cecilia’s message on awareness was also read out to the students
We worked on ‘Calls to Reflection’ along with the students. Discussions were made on why and how the JPIC should work, especially among the schools and also within the societies. Students were very active and they participated thoroughly.
A report on Sustainable Development was forwarded to us by Sr. Ceceilia O Dwyer. Goals on sustainability were discussed in the school meeting. The girls actively participated. Various ways of sustainability were discussed like how to clean our school environment, storage of water,planting trees.
International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking was celebrated at Loreto House with a prayer service during assembly. Our Principal Sr. Phyllis read about the life of Saint Bakhita and a prayer sent to us by Sr. Anita. The whole school took part in it. The message send by Sr. Sabrina was also conveyed to the students.
On the 15th of June, 2016 JPIC put up an assembly to create awareness about the disappearance of Judith D’Souza, who was abducted in Kabul. A powerpoint presentation was shown which depicted Judith’s life and bravery. The assembly ended with the reading of the letter sent to the Prime Minister urging him to bring Judith back home safely.
