Description: " BOAT SHOW"- by Sea Explorers Institute On the 20th of December fourgirls from class 9 accompanied by Mrs. S Dey had gone to Prinsep Ghat to attend a boat show. This boat show was organised by the Sea Explorers institute in association with INTACH and the Indian Navy. Goods were traded from Bengal from the BC era. Thus boats have always been a big part of Bengal. "Ananda" is a unique boat show which bring together- MAN with the RIVET through its boats. There was a 34 vessels display including - 11 cargo boats,3 entertainment boats and many surveying boats along with Navy boats and NDRF. Dr. Upen Biswas ( former CBI chief) was the chief guest of tge show. Different types of boats were showcased in the river Hugli.It included the dragon boat (of China) and kayaks. We were told about the materials boats are made of . Example: Carbon fibers Plywood Composite material Fibre-reinforced plastic Swarup Bhattacharyya known as the "Boatman of Bengal" were present with many dignitaries. Mr.Bhattacharya's work included the documentation preserving the maritime heritage and boat-making traditions of Bengal. In total we were shown 18 types of boats including: 1) Tale Donga is a boat made from the tal trees. It is maneuvered by a bamboo pole. 2) Talai is an elongated fishing boat. There are hundreds of hooks dangling from this boat. 3) Jelebachari is a fishing vessel and is also used to transport goods. 4) Khiler Nauka is a kayak shaped boat maneuvered by an oar. 5) Tiner Nauka it is a boat made out of tin. 6) Golpatar Nauka is a round /elliptical/rectangular boat used to carry cargo and for fishing. 7)Hogla boat is a traditional Bangladeshi boat. It originated in the Sunderbans mangrove region. They are flat bottomed. 8)Mahajoni nauka are very large boats used for fishing. 9) Plastic boat was a boat made out of plastics bottles. 10) Panchi boats are used as pleasure boats. They have a semi circular shed covering them. They are single handedly managed through skulling 11) Dragon boat is a popular boat of South East Asian countries. It's shape is like a dragon and it able to move very fast. 12) Biche rowed by 20 women sailors was also shown. 13) Kayaks 14) Indian Navy: Speed boat. Jhelum( a barge) is used to transport vessels and other goods 15) Fast indeceptor craft is a high speed vessel which is equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems. 16) GRSE( Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers) - Survey motorboats. It has twin engines and can carry 6 Navy men. It also has SONAR. 17) IWAI(Inland Waterways Authority of India) colourful boat. 18) Kolkata river trafic water police : Speedboats JetSki This show was very informative. All of the audience was enthralled and mesmerized by the beauty of the boats shown. We students would like to thank our principal Mrs Bagchi for giving us the opportunity to attend this show and Mrs S Dey for accompanying to the show.
