Mary Ward (1585 - 1645)

Foundress of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary Ward Week 2017

Mary Ward (1585-1645) was the foundress of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a religious order which has a worldwide presence engaging mainly in the education of girls and it is this institution of which Loreto House is a part.

Mary Ward's birth anniversary is on the 23rd of January and 30th of January is her death anniversary. This year's celebrations began with a thought provoking assembly on the life and teachings of Mary Ward, better known as her maxims, which was presented by Class XI Commerce and coordinated by Mrs. Das.

After this the various InterHouse Competitions were held spread over one week spanning activities like Service to the Literacy Centre, Speech, Music etc.

The Art Competition was held on the 13th of January with its theme being based on the core values of Mary Ward, Joy, Justice, Freedom, Sincerity etc. Each house had two participants working diligently on their artworks for over two hours with the result being striking masterpieces.

A Creative Writing Contest was also organised in which one participant from each house prepared a poem, essay or story based on one of Mary Ward's teachings.

The Speech Contest was held on the 1st of February and had six talented speakers from each house try to address the issues plaguing the world today. Placed in the shoes of Mary Ward, they tried to assess and solve, verbally, the global concern they would target if they were Mary Ward today.

In the Music Competition one band from each house performed an original song based on Mary Ward's maxims and core values such as freedom, justice, sincerity, peace and joy. The songs that the bands performed had been written and composed by the students themselves. This event was aimed at bringing to life the spirit and core values of our foundress, Mary Ward.

An innovative competition on Power Point Presentations was also organised with each house submitting a 10 minute long ppt based on Mary Ward's core values and maxims. This competition brought out the hidden talents of many tech geniuses in the school.

The final competition was the Play Competition held on the 3rd of February. On the 3rd of February, as part of our Mary ward week celebrations, the six houses put up plays based on of Mary Ward's maxims and core values of Loreto House. This event was a learning and enriching experience that gave the students of the younger classes great exposure and helped them build their confidence.

Another new addition to the Mary Ward Week was the non competitive Service to the Literacy Centre Activity which saw members of each house interact with the Literacy Centre students, sharing their tiffin, teaching them songs, playing games etc. The activity ended with a special surprise that was a gift every house presented to the students. This activity was one of a kind as it helped create memories for all the children.Of course each and every event went off very smoothly because of the diligent planning and execution of the various student coordinators and the never ending support and guidance of Mrs. Das.

This week's activities helped reinstate our faith in Mary Ward's saying, that "Women in time to come, will do much".
