Talk by representative from the Narcotics Cell, West Bengal Police A representative from the Narcotics Cell of the West Bengal Police spoke to the senior students (Classes IX to XII) about drug abuse, how drug peddlers trap unsuspecting young adults and the long-term effects of substance abuse on the mental and physical health of the users. In his very well-structured talk, on April 3, 2014, Mr. Chatterjee, parent of a student in Class nursery, made an impact on the students who had several questions, which he answered very well.
Teachers’ Orientation Programme
Br. Gerald Alvaris conducted a Two-day Orientation Programme for teachers on March 31 and April 1, 2014.The seminar included prayers, reflections and sharing in small groups as well as sharing with the large group. The teachers found the sessions very helpful and rejuvenating. After the programme they felt suitably refreshed and equipped to face the demands and stresses of the new academic session.
Workshop on Leadership
Loreto Day School, Bowbazar, organized a day-long seminar on Leadership for the Student Council members of all Loreto Schools in Kolkata on April 4, 2014. The resource persons included an eminent theatre personality, an educationist and a school principal. The eighteen member Loreto House Student Council enjoyed the different sessions and became more aware of their responsibilities as school leaders.
Aerospace and Science Discovery Camp
Students of Classes VI to X attended a Science Camp conducted by a five-member team from Atlantis Research, led by former NASA scientist Mr. Sam Gibbs, on April 5, 2014. The workshop was held over four sessions which included experiments on the concepts of static charges and air pressure, audio-visual presentations on the formation of the moon and the earth and the different components of the electromagnetic spectrum and the making of working models of mini rockets.
Church Services
A. First Friday Mass was held on April 4, 2014.
B. Sacrament of Reconciliation for Catholic students of both Junior and Senior School was held on April 7, 2014.
Orientation Programme for parents of students admitted to Class Nursery The Orientation Programme held on April 7, 2014, was well attended and addressed by the Principal, Vice-Principal and Junior school Co-ordinator. The vision of Mary Ward and the ideals of a Loreto Education were brought out through a Powerpoint presentation. The parents were also given an idea of the academic and co-curricular of the institution. The Class Teachers handled all queries regarding the day-to-day functioning of the Junior School and particularly the Nursery class.
Farewell
The school bid farewell to Mrs. S.N. Dutt, our very efficient and popular teacher of Mathematics and Psychology on April 8, 2014. At the special Prayer Service held, glowing tributes were paid to her by the Principal, fellow teachers and the students.
Yukti Fest
Students of Classes XI and XII attended the Yukti Fest, organized by Loreto Day School, Elliot Road, on April 9, 2014. The different events included elocution, cookery, a traditional costume fashion parade etc. The host school won the trophy, but graciously handed it over to us as we were the Runners-up.
Special Assemblies
A. Class VIII-1 had a special assembly on the new year customs and traditions in the different states of the country, on April 10, 2014. The assembly included several dances that are performed to welcome the new year by different communities living in harmony in this beautiful country.
B. Class IX-1 put up a special assembly on Easter on April 11, 2014. The story of Easter and Resurrection was narrated through a very well prepared Powerpoint presentation by Sr. Phyllis and Sr. Greta. The girls spoke about the significance of the different Easter traditions through a skit.
Guides’ Camp
On April 11 and 12, 2014, twenty-eight Guides had an overnight camp at the LoretoHouse school premises. This is a requirement for the Rajya Purashkar, as per the Guides syllabus. The camp gave the members of the Movement an opportunity to spend quality time together, during which they worked as well as enjoyed themselves.
LTS Interaction
On April 12, 2014, three LTSers interacted with a group of five German students at the LTS Centre. The two groups shared their cultures and values and discovered that the core values were the same in both countries.
Earth Day
A. The significance of Earth Day, April 22, was described to the students at Assembly. The theme of Earth day this year, ‘Green Cities’ was explained.
B. Students of Class VIII attended a workshop organized by the Indian Museum in association with GSI,ASI, WWF, Earth day Network and the Crafts Council of West Bengal. Through a series of events like pottery-making, drawing of Alpanas, a Purulia Chhau dance performance etc. ,the programme created an awareness among the students about the need to preserve our natural heritage.
Class XI Orientation Programme
The new batch of Class XI students (2014 -15) was given a warm welcome by the Class XII students. The programme included a welcome dance, various group activities designed to help the newly admitted students and the others to know each other and a performance by the Senior School Band. The session ended with a dance in which all the students participated.
Orientation Programme by Br. Brenden McCarthaigh
Mrs. P. Roychowdhury and Mrs. S Bhattacharjee attended pre-seminar workshop on ‘Sex and Gender in the Classroom ‘on April 24, 2014. Conducted by Br, Brenden the workshop threw light on the pertinent issues being faced by teachers in today’s world.
Inter-House Creative Writing Contest
The Inter-House English Creative Writing Contest was held on April 25, 2014 and the Hindi and Bengali Creative Writing contest was held on April 30, 2014. Several students from Classes VI to XII participated in the contest. The contests was co-ordinated by Mrs. Raka Das, Mrs. R. Singla and Mrs. S Chakrabarti.
Campaign against Hunger and Disease
A mini-fete was organized by the students of Classes VI to XII to raise funds for different projects to eradicate hunger and disease and to support the Loreto House Literacy Centre. Food stalls, Games stalls, Treasure Island and Lucky Dip were some of the attractions. The collections at the fete was INR 68,460/-
Awards
Ilina Ghosh of Class XII won a silver and two bronzes at the 7thAsian Taekwondo Championships held in Kathmandu.
Debates
The students reached the semi-finals at the prestigious Slater’s Debate from April 24 to 26, 2014 at Shimla. This is an invitation debate in which selected schools from all over India participate. The team won prizes in all the debates that they participated in.
May Day Celebrations
Students of Class X prepared a special prayer service and entertainment programme for the support staff of the school on April 29, 2014. The Principal treated the staff to lunch. The students thanked Dilip Durwan for looking after them for so many years and wished him a happy and peaceful retired life.
Crowning of our Lady
The Crowning of Our Lady on April 30, 2014 was organized by the Junior School. The solemn ceremony was attended by students of all classes, who joined in the hymns.
Investiture Ceremony
The Investiture Ceremony of the new Student Council was held on April 29, 2014. The Council took the oath to serve the school with dignity and integrity. The ceremony was attended by all the students of the Senior School.

First Friday Mass for Catholic students was held on May 2, 2014.
Orientation Programme for parents of students in Class VI, was held on Sat, May 3, 2014. In an Open Forum, teachers and parents discussed several issues to ensure a smooth transition for the children from Junior to Senior school. The children put up a special assembly for their parents.
Rabindra Jayanti, the Birth Anniversary of India’s greatest bard, was celebrated through a colourful programme of music, dance, elocution and readings. The programme which had excerpts from all Tagore’s dance dramas was strung together with a well-written script and a Powerpoint presentation.
The Inter-House Debate was organised by the Polemics Debating Society of Loreto House in collaboration with Concern for Calcutta. The topic ‘Does the present education system generate values for life?’ had both the proposition and opposition putting forward their arguments with conviction. Urvi Kumbhat of Tagore House, stood first, Sampurna Ghosh, a neutral Captain stood second and the third place was shared by Head Girl, Mouli Roychowdhury, and Aryana Anand and Ipsiata Gupta, both of Kennedy House.
The Inter-House Music and Dance Competitions were held on May 13 and 14, 2014. The different categories of the competitions included Eastern and Western vocals (solo), Western Band and Eastern and Western group dance presentations. In the Eastern Vocal category, the selections were all classical in genre and the performances were of a high standard. There were students who accompanied the singers on the tabla, harmonium and tanpura. In the Western vocal category the performances were strong and the songs selected were appreciated by The dances were beautifully choreographed, high in energy and had stunning costumes.
On Sat., May 3, 2014, LTS members attended the LTS Camp held at the LTS Centre for South Asia. The programme included modules on personality development, self discovery, leadership skills, organizational abilities, team spirit, confidence building etc. The programme also included a workshop on public speaking and a meeting with parents to help them realise the important role of LTS in a student’s life.
LTS Zonal Day was celebrated on Sat., May 10, 2014. Loreto House was the host school for Zone C. Six schools participated in the event which stressed on the importance of developing leadership and communication skills.

Nature Club
The members of the Nature Club organized a Clean-up Drive on Park Street and Camas Street along with the students of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School.
Debate
On June 18 and 19, 2014, the students participated in a debate ‘Terrorism is a Greater Threat to Society than Narcotic Drugs’ organized by the Anti Narcotics Cell of the Kolkata Police. Our students took part in the English, Hindi and Bengali debates. The team comprising of Mouli Roy Chowdhury and Anoushka Mitra stood first in the Bengali debate and the team comprising of and stood second in the Hindi debate.
Special Assemblies
The Music Club members put up a special assembly to celebrate World Music Day on June 20, 2014.The significance of the day, the rich tradition of folk and classical music in India and the evolving genre of World Music were highlighted through a well-written script , interspersed with music and singing. On June 27, 2014, Class XII Science had a special assembly on how they hoped to see themselves in the year 2030. They thanked the school for the excellent all-round education they have received and looked forward to becoming achievers who would make a difference.
Prize Distribution
Prize Distribution for the achieving students of the ICSE and ISC Examinations was held on June 23, 2014.
Elocution Contest
The Inter House Elocution Contest on June 23, 2014, showcased the talents of the students. With well-chosen elocution pieces, confidence and proper voice modulation, the participants impressed the audience and made the task of judging very difficult. Atrayee Chanda of Naidu House stood first in the Middle School category and Eva Rajan of Tagore House stood first in the Senior School category.
International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
On June 24, 2014, students of Class XI participated in a Silent March organized y the Anti Narcotics Cell of the Kolkata Police on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
JPIC Tenth Anniversary Celebrations
The JPIC( Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation) celebrated its tenth anniversary and its affiliation to the UN through a colorful function held at Loreto Convent, Entally on June 27, 2014.The JPIC Unit of Loreto House along with the children. of the Loreto House Rainbow Night Shelter participated in the cultural programme Our staff member Mrs. Frenaz Mogrelia moderated the Panel Discussion which had eminent speakers from all walks of life.

YCS/CLC

YCS Office Bearers attended the YCS General Meeting on July 12, 2014. All the member school presented their Reports for the academic session 2013-14 and their Proposed Plan of Activities for the academic session 2014-15.The Meet was addressed by Bishop Rev Thomas. The Office Bearers for the new DEXCO Committee were appointed.

2) Polemics-The Debate Society

The Debate Society participated in the L.N. Birla Memorial Debate organized by Birla High School and the Frank Anthony Memorial Debate organized by ISC Council. They also participated in the X-Mun organized by St. Xavier’s Collegiate School and The Peace Mission Mun organized by St. Thomas Boys’ School.

3) Nature Club

Members of the Nature Club participated in ‘Creation’ the Nature Fest organized by La Martiniere for Girls and won the trophy at the Ingenium Nature Fest of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School.

C. INTER-SCHOOL PARTICIPATION

The Students gave a good account of their talents at Karmayatra, the Inter-School Fest organized by the Interact Club of La Martiniere.

D. INTE- HOUSE ELOCUTION CONTEST

The Inter-House Vernacular Elocution Contest was organized by Keller House. In the Hindi Elocution Contest, the best speaker in the Middle School was Hiya Vasa of Mary Ward House. The second place was won by Srishti Bafna of Naidu House. In the Senior School Category, the first prize was jointly shared by Srijita Pal of Gandhi House and Barkha Sekhar of Keller House. The second place went to Shimona Francis of Tagore House.

In the Bengali Elocution Contest the best speaker in the middle school category was Atreyi Chanda of Naidu House and the second place was won by Meghna Ghosh of Keller House. In the senior school category the first place went to Rishika Ray of Naidu House and the second place went to Anoushka Mitra of Gandhi House.

E. TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMMES

Mrs E.Palmer and Ms.Margaret D’Costa attended a workshop on Innovative and Non- conventional methods of Teaching Mathematics organized by Pearson Longman. Use of simple aids like dice and cards and games like Ludo to teach mathematical operations and Napier’s Bones to help children learn their tables, made the session interesting.

F. FAREWELL

The School bid farewell to Mrs. Sushmita Sen, our Computer teacher. She was not only the backbone of the Computer Department, but also worked tirelessly to fix time-tables and examination schedules and was the school’s resource person for all ISC and ICSE related matters. She will be missed by the staff and students.

TEACHERS’ SEMINAR
On Aug14, 2014 Br.Dr. B Macarthaigh addressed the staff on Gender and Sex in School. In the interactive session Brother spoke about the widespread sexual abuse prevalent in present day society
UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS
On Aug 11, 2014, students of Classes XI-XII were addressed by officials from Singapore Management University (SMU), Singapore, about admission requirements of SMU and life in Singapore. In the highly interactive session several queries were answered.
SPECIAL ASSEMBLIES
Class XII Humanities organized a Special Assembly on Aug 12, 2014 on happiness coming from within and not through material gains.
prayers, music, dance and a skit, the presentation emphasized on freedom from the parochial attitudes and lawlessness and the need to bring about social transformation through education and vocational training.
FAREWELL
On Aug 29, 2014 teachers and students bid farewell to Mrs. Q. Roy, Secretary in the Principal’s office Mrs. Q. Roy was a much loved member of the staff because of her gentle ways and soft nature. In the many farewell speeches, she was much appreciated for her dedication to her work.

First Friday Mass and Teachers’ Day Prayer Service and Mass was held on Friday, September5, 2014.
Teachers’ Day
Junior School celebrated Teachers’ Day with a colourful programme, overseen by the Class V students. After the celebration in the Concert Hall, the fun and gaiety continued in the classrooms with the respective teachers. Senior School celebrated Teachers’ Day on September 22, 2014, after their Half Yearly Examinations. Through a beautiful and well organized programme the students paid their respects to their teachers.
Guides
Loreto House Guides participated in the “Symphony and Expression” annual competition for South Kolkata Guides. They stood first in the extempore speech competition and third in expressing their creativity in the “Best out of Waste” competition.
Junior School Concert
Junior School presented their annual concert on September 19 and 20, 2014, in the school Concert Hall. Entitled “Once Upon A Time”, the programme included excerpts from favourite fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White and others. A Scandinavian Dance spread good cheer. The enactment of the biblical story of Jonah through music and dance was the highlight of the presentation.
Educational Trips
Educational trips were organized for Classes IX to XII between September 19 and 28, 2014.Classes IX and X went to Puri, Raghurajpur, Dhawlagiri, Udaygiri, Khandagiri and Konarak. Classes XI and XII visited Vishakapatnam, Arakku Valley and Bora Caves. An overnight trip to Murshidabad was also organized. Such trips are always appreciated by the students as they help to forge close bonds between friends and also with faculty

YCS Forsytha Camp
Two students of the YCS group attended the YCS Forsytha Camp, held at Kalyani, between October 4 and 7, 2014. The Camp had sessions and spiritual excercises on the Holy Bible, the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. Sarah Chung was elected as the Media Manager for the diocese of West Bengal .
Retreats
Students of Class X went for a Retreat from October 13 to 14, 2014, and students of Class XII went from October 14 to18, in two groups. The venue for the Retreats was Dhyan Ashram. The facilitators organized interesting games and interactive sessions which the students enjoyed.The overnight stay also gave the children an opportunity to spend time with themselves and reflect on several issues important to them.
LTS
Children from the Rainbow Homes of Loreto Day Schools at Bowbazar and Dharamtalla, and Loreto House had their first LTS Orientation Day on October 18, 2014. LTSers from the regular stream of Loreto House helped in conducting one session.
Nature Club
Nature Club members took part in a Nature Fest organized by the Assembly of God Church School. The students won prizes in many of the competitions which included, Creating Wealth fom Waste, Quiz, Collage Making and Music and Dance events.
Business Meet
The Commerce students of Classes XI and XII organized Cynosure, the first business conclave being hosted by Loreto House, on October 31 and November 1, 2014. Through various events being presented in a game format, the students worked out the cost analysis, the manufacturing process, transportation and advertising strategy for a particular product. The sessions were highly interactive. The Panel Discussion had eminent business personalities and academicians addressing the students. Loreto House placed first at the event, but being the host school passed on the trophy to Don Bosco School, Park Circus.
